Who Mission Statements Are Actually Written For

The audience for a mission statement is rarely who you think.

A beginner reading a company mission tends to assume it is addressed to the public. The language is usually accessible, the tone welcoming. It seems designed to reassure potential customers that the organisation has good intentions and clear values.

A different audience altogether

Experienced managers and governance professionals understand that mission statements are primarily written for internal use. They serve as a reference point during disagreements about strategy, hiring, and resource allocation. When two departments want funding for competing projects, the mission is the document that settles the argument — in theory.

Research into organisational behaviour has found that employees who can accurately recall their employer's mission statement are more likely to describe their work as meaningful. The statement functions as a shared reference, not a marketing tool.

Why this matters for older adults

If you are involved in a community group, a charity, or a residents association, the same logic applies. A written mission that the committee actually consults during decisions is a functional document. One that exists only on a printed leaflet is decorative.

The practical test is straightforward: ask a staff member or committee member what the mission says. Their answer, or hesitation, tells you more than the document itself.
